It doesn't really help as much except 80% of the keys are visibly warm. Not hot (thankfully) but a bit warm. Are i7 chipsets supposed to be this hot (Highest recorded on CoreTemp was 48*C on core 2.)

Are you under load? 48C isn't too unheard of if you're gaming or something like that.

Last I checked, it doesn't seem to be running under load.

Hm. My Aspire S7 doesn't get nearly that hot, even when I'm running games. You may want to (carefully) crack it open and see if the vents are dusty or if some fans are not working.

Ah, it's brand new. I'm not sure how Lenovo built the Y50 in terms of cooling, but...
I might have to find the schematics on how air is routed through the system.

When I play GTA 4 in bootcamp on my 13" MBP the keys hurt to touch. But my computer cools out of a tiny mail slot thats mostly obstructed by the hinge cover, so my computer also cools through the keyboard. When I play GTA inn clamshell mode, my computer shuts off after 10 minutes because then the keyboard is obstructed by the screen and it overheats

Shiny, I've heard good things about the performance of the Y50. Venting through the bottom is... interesting. I looked it up and apparently it's common for them to get pretty toasty when they're being used for pretty much anything.

It's not bad for a laptop, and knowing it could handle Ace Combat, Sims, etc...
However, I was considering on getting the 4GB 860M variant but decided against it.

If your highest temperature is only 48C, you aren't even coming close to cracking the potential of the chip. What % load and overclocking were you getting at those temperatures?
Also, keep in mind, if you've got an aluminum casing (any of the HP Envy, Dell XPS, etc.) the body will transfer even low temperatures to the body. It's a way of keeping the laptop cool, by transferring heat away from the processor through conduction.

8% CPU load and it's not overclocked if memory serves me right. Also, most of the casing feels like plastic.

I actually did a test on an older-generation i5, which by all means should be hotter than the newer i7 you have. I'm at 47C under 17% load underclocked at about ~95%. I have the processor state set to a minimum of 90% under the power settings, simply because I don't want to deal with unexpected processor speed drops when trying to save power (I use a charger most of the time)
Raising the minimum processor overclock to 100% (so now it's consistently around 110% overclock) raised temperatures up to about 50C under 12%.
I then fired up skyrim and did put some reasonably heavy graphics, ran around and got a village angry at me (it was an integrated graphics i5) and the highest I could get was 65C under 40% load and 110% overclock. This was with enough load to see a noticable (~25 or less) drop in FPS.
The WASD keys were obviously warm, but nothing alarming, and the fan wasn't even kicking on loudly at all, it was still silent. I don't think it kicks on until 70C anyway.
My point is that even with this older-generation processor, the I series idles high, but under heavy load they shrug it off.
EDIT: I measured it with Realtemp 3.7 BTW, on what is an unmodified dirt cheap commercial laptop I got refurbished.

That's still not bad. See my other thread.
Check it under 40-50% load with overclocking and see if it even goes over 70C.

Under 8% load and no overclock I'm getting around 44C.

Temp test here. My favorite laptop numbers site.
